Professor Marie-Jean THORAVAL obtained his Masterdegrees from Ecole Polytechnique (Paris, France) in 2007 and Supaéro (Toulouse,France) in 2008. He then pursued his PhD in Fluid Mechanics with ProfessorSigurdur T. Thoroddsen in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology(KAUST, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia), from where he graduated in 2013. From 2013 to2015, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Physics of Fluids group inthe University of Twente (The Netherlands), with Professor Jacco Snoeijer,Professor Frits Dijksman and Professor Detlef Lohse. Since September 2015, heis Professor at Xi'an Jiaotong University, where he started with the YoungTalent Support Plan of the university.

His research focuses on interfacial flows, includingdrops and bubbles, combining the fastest high-speed cameras together with largeparallel numerical simulations. His research has been published in top journalssuch as Physical Review Letters, Journal of Fluid, Physical Review E andChemical Engineering Journal. His results have been highlighted in three coverimages of Journal of Fluid Mechanics and have recently received the 2018 BestScientific Award of the Photron Slow Motion Video Award. He is currently incharge of two research funds from the National Natural Science Foundation ofChina (NSFC) supporting his research.

报告摘要:

The impact of a drop has many applications fromcombustion to the spreading of crop diseases or three-dimensional printing. This fundamental phenomenon has therefore attracted a lot of interest fromdifferent fields. However, most studies have focused on the case of a dropcontaining only one fluid. Many applications involve complex liquids such asdispersions or emulsions. When a second immiscible phase is added into thedrop, some more complex dynamics emerge. We will consider the simplestgeometries where either a bubble, a particle or another immiscible liquid dropare added inside the impacting drop. They can produce a new type of vertical splashingduring the impact. We will investigate the conditions under which splashing isobserved and propose some physical models to explain these vertical dynamics.
